For as long as many current students can remember, the University of North Florida's TV studio has looked more like a ghost town than a place to learn broadcasting.
Now, WJWB TV-17 has given UNF broadcast journalists renewed excitement by allowing them to produce and air their own TV show called In Tune with Jacksonville, a public affairs format that will be broadcast the last Sunday of each month, starting Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Until now, students earning a bachelor of science degree in the communication's broadcasting track knew nothing of directing or switching or teleprompters or chroma keys. That's what internships were for.
But the agreement is not without benefit for the station. Faced with Federal Communications Commission license renewal, TV-17 is obligated to provide an informative public affairs show that addresses the concerns of the community.
Station Manager Michael Liff approached UNF's Communications Department about giving the broadcasting students the opportunity, and he is optimistic about the results. "It's the perfect partnership," said Liff. "We don't have the staff to produce public affairs programming and UNF doesn't have the facilities to have a hands-on experience in producing these types of shows."
Aside from the station's list of proposed topics, the students run the show. Keeping it young and hip, they chose to use different local bands each week to open the show and roll the credits, hoping to draw young adult viewers. Public service announcements promoting UNF serve as commercials between segments and the crew of 16 even includes a local celebrity.
If the relationship proves to be viable, UNF has hinted at adding it to the curriculum as a course. Whether TV-17 and UNF live happily ever after together remains to be seen. But for now, the fall class of Advanced TV Production is just hoping for a happy ending.

The top speaker from each group then advanced to a final round at 8:30.
The competition was coordinated by Communication faculty members Sam and Traci Mathies. Judges were recruited from the Communication faculty and from the community. All finalists were presented a plaque.
